            UPCOMING CLASS OF 63 EVENTS!

The following is a letter from John Owen to the Class of 1963 and friends:

July 18, 2026   ANNUAL CLASS REUNIONS

"This is just a reminder that I will not be hosting any further annual class
reunions. I want to thank all of our classmates for the wonderful get togethers
over the last 25 years, which is when our monthly breakfasts began.
Somewhere along the line, Charley Boston encouraged me to put on an Annual
Class Reunion as he felt that seeing classmates every five years was not enough.
Charley and I agreed that it was necessary to see our classmates more often.
Thus began the Annual Class Reunion.

"We have had great attendance at the yearly breakfast at the Newport Steak and
Seafood and I want to thank classmates that attended from other classes.
Attendance at South Beach dropped off a couple of years ago and we did not
have one last year. However, attendance at breakfast was excellent with about
25 people attending.

"Attendance at the monthly breakfast has been falling off and the decision was
made to have a quarterly breakfast. The attendance has also been low there as
well. Patty and I have discussed this as there are many reasons for the low
attendance. Some classmates do not drive anymore, others are housebound,
some are caregivers for spouses, other family members and/or friends. We are a
very caring and giving class.

"As John Wayne often said “I am taking the long way around the barn”. We feel
that it is time to discontinue the NHS breakfasts and the Annual Class Reunion.
However, if someone wants to put a breakfast together, go for it. This does not
mean that a five year reunion is not going to happen. Frank, Ruth and Beth did a
great job with the last one. Will they do the next one, I have no idea.
I want to personally thank Patty for maintaining the Class of 1963 website. She
has done a wonderful job. I want to thank Jeanene for maintaining the roster.
Last but not least, I want to thank Frank for being Treasurer and keeping us out
of prison. LOL

"I started first grade with many classmates and have remained friends with
everyone for about 75 years. We have lost several classmates over the years,
however, they will always be my friends. Til we meet again.

"This is a farewell for now, but not goodbye. Karen and I will be in Albany
sometime in August and we hope to catch up with some of our friends there.
"Feel free to contact me at anytime.

THANK YOU TO JOHN OWEN FOR EVERYTHING HE HAS DONE OVER THE LAST 43 YEARS ON BEHALF OF THE CLASS OF 1963, NHS!

So now, we get to figure out how we want to go forward from here.

We started having our monthly class breakfasts 24 years ago, in February 2002!  That was when a small group gathered in Salem area to begin working on trying to locate all the class members, prior to our 40th reunion that was scheduled for the following year!  During the first 19 years, we only missed 3 times--once when we scheduled the breakfast in central Oregon & no one showed up, and two other times when we cancelled the event due to severe weather limitations!   Then, in March 2020, Covid-19 shut us down for two long years, until March 2022.

Monthly Breakfasts resumed in April, 2022, but we changed from monthly to quarterly breakfasts until 2026.

Many thanks to everyone who helped make this happen, in many different ways.  You are all valued, as classmates and as friends.

Did you know?  Our class site has now been viewed more than 125,000 times!

This site has had 125,840 total  visits since we started it in November 2013!

To make it easier for planning our calendars:

The idea was always to make the breakfast sites reachable for as many classmates as possible!

Do YOU have other ideas?  Other locations where you would like to meet for breakfast?  In the past we have tried the Eugene area a few times, but the turnout there was usually low.  We have never met in Corvallis, so that is another possibility.    Would really like to hear your ideas!

Please contact us at newportcubs63@yahoo.com and let us hear your ideas!
